DEFINITIONS FITTING - Any functional accessory attached to a sling. FLEMISH-ROLLED EYES - An eye splice that is constructed by opening the rope body into two parts, one having three strands and the other having the remaining three strands and the core. GALVANIZED - Zinc coating for corrosion resistance. GRADE - Categorized by strength and/or type of material. GROMMET - An endless circle or ring fabricated from one continuous length of wire rope. HELIX/HELICAL - The shape formed by a line that curves around and along a central line forming a spiral. HITCH - A method of rigging (attaching) a sling temporarily to a load or object for the purpose of lifting. HITCH, BASKET - Method of sling loading where the sling is passed under the load with both ends, end attachments(eyes) on the hook, or single master link. HITCH, CHOKER - Method of sling loading where the sling is passed around the load through one end attachment or eye and is suspended by the other. HITCH, VERTICAL - Method of sling loading where the load is suspended on a single part or leg. HOIST - A mechanical device for lifting and lowering loads. HOOK - A curved or angular piece of metal for lifting, pulling or suspending. HOOK LATCH - A mechanical device used to close the throat opening of a hook. IWRC - Independent Wire Rope Core JIS B - Japanese Industrial Standards KINK - A unique deformation of a wire rope caused by a loop being pulled down tight. It represents irreparable damage and indeterminate loss of strength in the wire rope. LAY - The direction of a strand or wire helix (as it pertains to wire rope). LAY LENGTH - The distance in which a strand makes one complete helical revolution around the wire rope core. LOAD - The object being lifted or lowered. MASTER LINK - Forged or welded steel link used to support all members (legs) of a sling. MECHANICAL COUPLING LINK - A non-welded, mechanically closed link used primarily to attach ttings to alloy steel chain. NAVFAC - Naval Facilities Engineering Command NOMINAL - Relating to a designated or theoretical size or strength that may vary from the actual. OPEN SOCKET - A wire rope tting that consists of a basket and two ears with a pin. OSHA - Occupational Safety & Health Administration POLYESTER ROUND SLING - A continuous loop of polyester yarn covered with a polyester fabric. PREFORMED WIRE ROPE - Wire rope in which the strands are permanently formed during fabrication into the helical shape they will assume in the wire rope.
