                                DEFINITIONS
PROOF LOAD - The speci c load applied in performance of the proof test.
PROOF TEST - A nondestructive tension test to verify the integrity and workmanship of the individual sling.
QUALIFIED PERSON - A person who, by possession of a recognized degree, certi cate, or professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, successfully demonstrated the ability to solve/resolve problems relating to the subject matter, the work, or the project.
QUALIFIED RIGGER - A rigger who meets the criteria for a quali ed person.
RATED CAPACITY - The maximum allowable load established by the sling manufacturer. The terms ‘‘rated capacity’’ and
‘‘working load limit’’ are commonly used to describe rated load.
SHACKLE - A metal link, typically U-shaped, closed by a bolt, and used to secure a sling.
SLEEVE - A tubular piece manufactured from metal that  ts over a wire rope.
SLING - An assembly to be used for lifting when connected to a lifting mechanism. The upper portion of the sling is connected to the lifting mechanism and the lower supports the load.
SUB-ASSEMBLY - A master link designed to be used with multi-legged slings or assemblies.
SWAGGING (COLD PRESSING) - The process of mechanically forming a  tting onto the eye or end of a wire rope.
THIMBLE - Grooved metal  tting to protect the eye, or fastening loop of a wire rope.
WEB SLING - A sling made of synthetic materials such as nylon or polyester.
WEDGE SOCKET - A wire rope  tting where in the rope end is secured by a wedge.
WIRE ROPE - A  exible rope constructed by laying steel wires into various patterns of multi-wired strands around a core system to produce a helically wound rope.
WORKING LOAD LIMIT (WLL) - The maximum allowable working load established by the sling manufacturer. The terms ‘‘rated capacity’’ and ‘‘working load limit’’ are commonly used to describe rated load.
